Hey ya’ll!
I’m back with some more tips and more tricks this Friday.
There are so many experiences people deal with on a day to day that could lead to not taking the best care of our homes. When we come home, we want to know we’re entering our safe place and refuge. This may require us to take a step back to determine if our homes provide the solace we desire. Are we even aware of the stress that our home may be causing? If you have a cluttered, poorly decorated, or somewhat disorganized living space, home relaxations can be nearly impossible.
I want to talk about what it means for us to get organized and some things you can begin to implement to remedy any disorganization you may have. I know being disorganized can feel overwhelming, so we’ll take it slow.
Remember, this is a process and I’m here to help.
Tip #1 : Set an agenda
I already know what you’re thinking, “I only set an agenda at work” or in more “professional” settings.
And it can seem a bit silly to set an agenda for your home.
BUT, I’m here to change your mind!
The good thing about agendas are the fact they are transferable across any area of your life.
When you begin to define your home goals, setting that agenda and sticking to it will begin to improve the way you think about organizing and maintaining your home.
An agenda is perfect for knowing exactly what you’re doing. They also provide very clear objectives. When you’re in the thick of tackling tasks, your agenda helps to keep you on track and minimizes distractions. The most important area agendas help in: FEELING SUCCESSFUL. Setting an agenda when organizing our home in a space that may have been overwhelming before, you get to check off that you’ve completed a task. distracted so you know exactly what you need to get done to be successful. No pop up surprises
Tip #2: Work in time blocks
There’s a very simple reason why time blocking works: it is designed for focus. You could imagine why time blocking is important after setting an agenda for your home. You will be able to safeguard distractions and multiply focus.
Scheduling specifics within these time blocks for your home: such as getting rid of junk in one drawer for 30 minutes and then moving to another low level task that will not be overwhelming will help to multiply your focus.
“Single-tasking—focusing on one task at a time—can make you up to 80% more productive than splitting your attention across multiple tasks”
-Elizabeth Scott
Here’s what I suggest: only set 30 minute to 1 hour time blocks.
Knowing you have a finite amount of time to do that one thing helps to get through it.
Depending on decluttering or organizing, you want to be able to make decisions.
At marker 20, make sure you make sense of what you’ve done and start to “clean up” depending on the time block you set for yourself.
Max your time block at 1 hour.
Tip #3: Establish rules for decluttering categories
Here’s our favorite weekly reminder: The first step and KEY to success when organizing is to declutter.
If you buy clothes all the time – if it’s stained, ripped, you forgot about it or you’re not going to wear it, get rid of it.
With all of my clients, it is my job to help reinforce it. So, as you are establishing r
Ultimately it is their decision on what stays but it keeps the objective clear as the process goes along.
You don’t want to begin the process of decluttering if you know you’re going to be buying more stuff. You will be undoing all of your efforts.
It is also my job to empower you. Do not hold onto things that are causing guilt. I know the item you’re hoarding may have some sentimental value BUT we must assess properly.
Yes, you likely paid a lot of money or it is the only one they had. Know that we are also getting rid of this guilt.
Again remind yourself, these things are yours. The decision of whether to keep them is also yours.
And our ultimate goal is to make sure you have peace in your home!
Peace and love,
Kenika
