Creating Long-Lasting Organizing Systems!

8C9A3829 Pano

Hey y’all!

Today, we’re going to get right into it.

You want to have better organizing systems in your home. And you know what, you deserve that!

But one second — before I give it to you, I want to say that this first one is the MOST important tip that I’m going to share.

Tip #1: Adjust your habits

Your space is disorganized. It’s cluttered. It’s all of the things that seem to consistently overwhelm you.

And if you begin to sit with it as I do, you begin to see that these are routines that you may have created for yourself.

There are some things you can begin to ask yourself about yourself so that you can begin to see some changes in your organizing system:

  1. Do I have a home and space for everything?
  2. Have I purged (gotten rid of things) lately?
  3. Do I have enough storage for the things I need and love?

So, if you have gotten in the habit of not making your bed before you leave for the day or you’re going to bed with a messy kitchen, all of those things are going to be things that you are going to have to revamp to create long-lasting systems.

Here is where we can start the work if we know that is something you may be struggling with.

Although we can build unhealthy habits, the most important thing that you can do to create long-lasting systems for organizing is to begin to check your thoughts and begin to shift how you see your space.

Say it with me — POSITIVE AND PRODUCTIVE thoughts as we continue to adjust our (organizing) habits.

Tip #2: Completely declutter before starting your organizing journey

And even before you try to implement those new organizing systems you’ve established because of changed habits.

 You HAVE to declutter.

Don’t organize clutter. It’s not going to be long-lasting. It’s still going to look cluttered and messy.

And you’re just not going to get that sense of peace that you’re hoping for if you were to completely declutter or purge before you start your organizing journey.

This tip along with tip #1 are tied in terms of importance! (I know I said Tip #1 was the most important).

I am only reiterating because I want you all to start to feel the joy of what organizing can mean and be for you and your space.

Tip #3: Invest in the proper products for your space.

So, before you go buy all these pretty and expensive organizing products, make sure you have done your due diligence before you get to the store.

What does due diligence mean? I’m so glad you asked. Keep reading —

  1. Measure your space:  You have to be sure to consider the different functionalities that you’re going to need for that space before you buy products.

Really consider things like vertical space. The kind of products you invest in for this type of space will allow you to see how you can “go up”.

If you’re investing in bins — do you want your bins to be stackable? Are you trying to find storage for your shoes? Do you want to use wall space? Do you want to use shoe boxes? Do you want to use the door rack?

Consider the type of functionality you’re looking for before you go invest in all these products. Ask yourself some of those questions in terms of vertical space versus real estate space versus stackable, or if you want items to lay flat, or if you want to be able to turn it or pull it out easily.

When you begin to thoughtfully invest in products that are really built for an intended and particular space, it’s easier for you to maintain it because you’re not working too hard to get the things you need when you need them.

And then my last tip, this one is really important too! (see they’re all important)

Tip #4: Label everything that you have just organized.

Right? You thought it was something in far left field.

So, here’s the pitch: You’ve invested in organizing products and now you should be labeling them.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on all of these fancy labels. You just need something that has a label of what is in that bin or what is in that space.

Having labels is really going to ensure that you’re keeping up with the systems you’ve built around now healthy habits. This is not only going to help you but it’s going to help other people using that space keep up with the system.

Because at this point, there’s really no excuse at this to put things in the wrong space because everything is clearly labeled.

That’s it y’all! These are some tools that I use when I’m creating a space that is going to be sustainable and organized for a long period of time. And these are tools that I want you to be able to consider, try out and then be able to place in your own tool belt.

Let me know if it was helpful.

Share it with a friend (or stranger)

Save it — all that good stuff.

Peace and Love.
