Closet Organizing Hacks

No matter what kind of closet you have, these closet organization tips will help you keep it neat and functional.

1. Declutter

Up to 80% of the things people keep in their closets are not used, which means you’re probably wasting a lot of space. Before you can get your closet organized, you’ll want to declutter anything you no longer need.

To declutter, remove everything and sort items into three piles — keep, donate and discard. This helps you see what you have, making it easier to assess what you need. If you haven’t worn it in five years, it’s time for it to go. Determine whether you should donate or discard something based on whether it’s in good, wearable condition or not.

Another category you can add is “sell.” Plenty of sites allow you to market gently used items online if they are in good condition. Holding a yard sale is also a good option to get rid of things all at once.

Getting rid of unnecessary items frees up space, which you can maximize using closet organizing products such as shelf dividers and bag hangers.

2. Categorize

Before returning items to the closet, group similar items together. For example, piles could contain shirts, pants, shoes and so on. This helps you decide how much space to allocate to certain things and where to place them in the closet.

You might also want to create subcategories to further optimize your space. For example, organizing clothes by garment length can maximize the amount of space you have on the floor underneath your hanging clothes.

When you’re categorizing everything, put your longer items, like formal dresses or trench coats, in a separate pile and hang them all up together. Likewise, when you hang shorter items together, like shirts, you’ll create more open space underneath them to put in a dresser or laundry basket.

3. Designate Zones

Create specific zones in your wardrobe for the categories and factor in big real-estate things like suitcases in your plan if you store them here. Keeping all your shoes and bags in one section and your clothes in another inspires a visually appealing aesthetic. It makes finding things and putting them back where they belong quicker, which helps keep your closet organized longer.

Also, remember to include a place to hold all your dirty laundry, as well as clean items that need to be folded or hung. Putting a laundry basket in one corner prevents worn clothes from being strewn all over the closet and bedroom floor. It’s best to separate dark and light clothing to avoid color bleeding.

4. Create a System for Organizing

People are different, and so are their preferences. Come up with a system that works for you. It could be arranging by color, season or frequency of use, using matching hangers or investing in storage bins. Whatever you choose, ensure it’s easy to maintain and is visually appealing whenever you open your closet doors.

5. Optimize Your Space for Organizing

Maximize the space in your closet by investing in various closet organization products. Consider purchasing organizers or strategically installing shelves and drawers to hold similar items. In the warmer seasons, use those burly suitcases and travel bags to hold extra blankets, duvets and bulky winter wear.

There’s so much you can do with the space you have. Implement closet organization ideas based on your specific type.

Organization Tips for Specific Closet Types

How you plan your storage space depends on the type of closet you have, Here are some specific tips that work for different types of closets.

Small Closets

Closet organization for a small closet is about finding ways to expand the little room you have. Optimize vertical space with shelves that reach the ceiling to provide more storage. Slim hangers save precious inches and make your clothes look effortlessly organized. Over-the-door organizers make perfect use of otherwise wasted space. They’re ideal for shoes and cleaning supplies.

Built-In Closets

Built-in closets are often customizable, but they still require organization. Whether you designed the closet yourself or it came with your house, you’ll want to determine how to organize your clothes based on what you have. For example, if you have a lot of shoes, you’ll need to use more shelf space to store them.

If the built-in has drawers, use shallow ones to store socks and underwear, and deeper drawers to keep pajamas or thicker clothes. Pull-out trays can be used to keep accessories like sunglasses or wallets.

If you’re lacking hanging space or drawers, use baskets to keep clothes folded and organized on shelves. You can also put in additional rods to hang more clothes if needed.

Reach-In Closets

Reach-in closets are small but can be incredibly functional with the right approach. One of the best closet organization ideas for a reach-in closet is to design a system with adjustable shelves, rods and drawers. Install a second hanging rod to double the capacity for hanging clothes. Utilize baskets or install drawers at the bottom for folded items like jeans, sweaters or towels.

Wardrobe Closets

When planning closet organization for a wardrobe closet, begin by storing seasonal items in separate sections. Wardrobes may have limited space to hang clothes and a few drawers, so it’s essential to have only in-season pieces in them.

If your wardrobe is wide enough, you could use a hanging shelf to keep more folded items. Otherwise, hang up as many garments as you can, then use baskets to store folded clothes on the floor of the wardrobe. Any drawers can be used to store undergarments or pajamas.

Store out-of-season clothes in storage bins to slide under your bed.
