This project was a three-day endeavor in a client’s primary suite, involving both decluttering and organizing her bedroom and closet. The result? A stunning boutique-style closet that not only looks incredible but also offers practical functionality tailored to her needs.
The Tidied by K process begins with decluttering to create a blank canvas.
Pro Tip: It’s important to pare down to what you love, need and use before diving into organizing.
From there, we plan a system that maximizes space and ensures every item has a dedicated spot. We designed the client’s closet system based off the quantity of items. So consider counting your shoes, handbags, long hang items, like dresses and coats, and pants/shirts so your custom closet design will make sense for your items.

DIY Steps for a Custom Closet Makeover
If you’re tackling this project on your own, follow these steps for a successful transformation:
- 1. Declutter First: Remove everything from your closet and sort through your items. Ask yourself: Do I use this? Do I need this? Do I love it? Let go of anything that doesn’t make the cut. And be sure to be ruthless and honest during this phase. Try to be realistic with this so when it’s time to organize, you’re only finding homes for things you absolutely want to keep.
- 2. Plan Your Layout: Think about how you want your space to function. Measure your closet and consider adding modular systems like the Modular Closets system I used (use code TBK15 for 15% off). If you go the route with Modular Closets, you’ll have to install it yourself, but booking a Task Rabbit is super simple if you’re not the most handy person. But I will say, if you know how to do basic furniture assembly and how to use a drill, you can probably manage on your own.
- 3. Organize by Category: Group similar items together (e.g., tops, bottoms, shoes, accessories). That way it’ll e easier for you to function in the space and the flow of your custom closet will make sense and look more like a boutique.
