Move Into A New Apartment: 10 Smart Steps To Prepare For Your Move

Moving for lots of people can be a very stressful time, but if you are planning to move into a new apartment this blog is going to be helpful. Moving into a new apartment usually has a lot of advantages, but moving is also one of the more stressful things that a person can go through. If you’re unsure how to prepare to move into a new apartment, here are a few helpful tips to get the ball rolling for you.

move into a new apartment

Taking the plunge to move out of my dorm room and move into a new apartment was an exciting time for me a while back. And after graduating college in GA in the summer of 2014 and deciding to move to OK to become a teacher was an even more exciting time. Not only was I moving away from my friends and family, I was also moving into my first big girl apartment! Transitioning from my dorm room to my new apartment was great and all, but if I’m being honest… it was only a few steps away from campus and I had 3 roommates to help me.

My move into my new apartment in Tulsa, Oklahoma was major and taught me A LOT. In this blog, I’ll be sharing with you move in tips you probably don’t know, I’ll share with you a moving checklist you 100% need, and even share a few must haves for moving into your new apartment.

Smart tips on how to prepare to move into a new apartment.

Start With A Detailed Plan

The first step in preparing for your move is to create a detailed plan. Begin by setting a moving date and work backward to establish a timeline for all the tasks you need to complete. It’s a good idea to prioritize these tasks by deadlines and take care of the more urgent ones first.

You should notify your landlord of your moving date and ask for any special moving instructions. You can also use this time to notify any professional movers or rent a moving truck if you plan to do it yourself. Try to have some backup plans in case things fall through close to the day of the move.

Declutter & Pack Strategically

Instead of packing up everything you own, moving is a great opportunity to declutter and get rid of things you don’t need anymore. Try to go through your rooms one at a time and pick out things to throw away, donate, or otherwise decide not to bring with you. Less to pack means less to sort through when you get to your new place.

A professional packing tip when moving is to load up your non-essential items first. You probably won’t need your heavy winter coats or Christmas decorations in the summer, so they’re easy to get out of the way early on. When packing, use sturdy boxes and secure them with packing tape. Wrap fragile items carefully with bubble wrap or packing paper and label each box with its contents and destination.

Take Care of Logistics

One of the main ways to prepare to move into your new apartment is to handle all the logistical tasks as they come up. Before you leave your old place, you may want to stop by the post office and fill out a change of address form. Update people like your internet service provider, your bank, your insurance company, and anyone else who may need to know you’re moving to a new place.

Must Haves for Your Move

As you get closer to your moving day, it’s crucial to have all your essentials ready to go. Your move-in must-haves should include items like cleaning supplies, toiletries, basic kitchen utensils, and a first aid kit. These will ensure that your first few days in your new apartment are as comfortable as possible. Don’t forget your essentials box – the one with all the things you’ll need immediately upon arrival, like a shower curtain, bed linens, and a set of tools for any quick fixes.

Moving & Packing Tips

Moving doesn’t have to be a stressful event if you’re armed with the right moving and packing tips. Start by packing room-by-room to keep everything organized. Use color-coded labels for each room to make unpacking easier. Another great tip is to pack a suitcase with your essentials as if you’re going on a weekend trip. This way, you have everything you need without having to dig through boxes on your first night.

Incorporating a Moving Planner or Checklist

A moving checklist is a lifesaver. It keeps you organized and ensures you don’t forget any critical tasks. Break down your moving tasks week-by-week to make the process more manageable. From notifying your landlord and scheduling movers to transferring utilities and updating your address, a detailed checklist will help keep you on track and reduce moving day stress.

Being Prepared Financially

Moving can be expensive, so being prepared financially is key. Start by creating a budget for your move. Include costs like hiring movers, renting a truck, buying packing supplies, and any deposits or fees for your new place. It’s also wise to set aside some extra funds for unexpected expenses. Planning your finances ahead of time will make your move smoother and less stressful.

Setting Up Utilities & Services

Ensure your utilities are set up before you move in. Contact your new apartment’s utility providers to schedule service start dates for electricity, water, gas, and internet. This will make sure everything is up and running when you arrive.

Familiarize Yourself with the New Neighborhood

Take some time to explore your new neighborhood before moving day. Locate nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, and other essential services. Knowing the area will help you feel more at home once you move in.

Furniture and Layout Planning

Measure your new apartment and plan where your furniture will go. This will save time and effort on moving day. Consider creating a floor plan to visualize the space and ensure everything fits.

Safe & Security

Change the locks on your new apartment for added security. Check the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they’re working. Familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency exits and procedures.

Moving into a new apartment doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By starting with a detailed plan, decluttering and packing strategically, taking care of logistics, and incorporating these additional tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a seamless transition. Happy moving and enjoy your new home!
