Hey friends!
Let’s face it, most teenagers are a complete mess when we think about how they keep their rooms.
Tell me, do these things resonate with you:
Piles of clothes scattered all over the floor, empty cereal bowls and water bottles on the nightstand and clothes hanging out of the drawers… even though it’s all pretty normal (and predictable) behavior, it’s still an eye sore. And if you’re anything like my clients, I know you wish your teens could get it together, right?
When our kids hit the teen years, their bedroom becomes far more than simply a place to sleep. It becomes their retreat. It’s where they crash after a long day, relax after school, study for tests, hang out with friends and escape to be alone, which is exactly why it’s so important to make it a haven they love.
Knowing these things, I wanted to give you some helpful tips to help your little (or I guess, not so little teen) declutter their room once and for all. We want to begin to help them create a special and organized place they can call their sanctuary. In this blog I’m sharing some practical things to help you reclaim their room. And if you click on this link you’ll be able to see how I revamped my client’s son’s room into his only little oasis.
- Start by EDITING the space. You’ll need to create three piles: Keep, Donate, or Toss
Editing your space to ensure that the only things you love are critical steps to ensuring your teen’s space can be organized
Where is a great place to start? I’m glad you asked. A great place to start would be your teens closet. Using the three categories, allow your teen to rummage through clothing items they love to wear, barely wear and things you know you should get rid of. You then want to edit every other area of the room while sorting things into the three piles. Sifting through these items will allow you and your teen to see how much more accessible a space can be. Know that this process will take some time, patience and great effort.
- Storage, Storage, and More Storage
Teens have a unique way of attracting not only extra people but extra THINGS. Creating a place for their many things is going to be the key to keeping your teens space not only more organized but more functional.
a. Maximizing your space and offering solutions are key. Some solutions would be using items like an ottoman with built in storage.
b. Consider multifunctional furniture. Stackable bins or fun items like colorful storage baskets
c. Everything they have needs to have its own place. Do they have books? Use a bookcase to maximize vertical space. Do they have bulky sweaters and shirts? Use those storage bins to your advantage.
d. Give the room a personality. A creative idea here would be to determine what your kid likes. An example of something fun is a refurbished locker. What would we use that for you ask? You guessed right, more storage!
3. The Closet: From Cluttered to Clean
Provide opportunities for easy maintenance in their revamped closet. This means creating systems that improve daily habits.
a. Multi-pocket hanging closet organizers are great for sweatshirts, sweaters, jeans, and sweatpants.
b. A sturdy shoe rack is a must and collapsible storage bins work great for storing items they don’t need every day.
c. A hamper or laundry bag that’s big enough for all their dirty clothes.
For girls, special hangers designed for scarves and purses are a must for keeping everything they need within easy reach.
You want to be sure to have fun with this project! With a little time, energy, creativity and all your love, you and your teen can create an awesome space that suits their individual personality and needs perfectly. It also begins to take that burden off of you as they begin to navigate a more organized and functional space!
Peace and love.
