Hey ya’ll!
Let’s talk about that closet.
Walking into your closet can sometimes feel like you’re stepping into tornado alley. You never know what you’re going to find — a pile of clothes on the floor waiting to be cleaned. Maybe you have a sea of shoes scattered all throughout the floor? Are those belts jumbled in piles making it super hard to grab what you need when you need it? Do you also have socks with no matches stuffed in drawers?… All in all, it’s a complete mess — and you’re pretty much over it.
I know we spend good money on the things we buy, so we’ve got to treat them right. I’m going to share some tips on how to fully maximize your closet space so that you can have an amazingly organized closet to thrive in.
Tip #1 : Let’s talk shoe storage.
Your options can vary depending on the amount of shoes you have (after you’ve decluttered) and your space limitations. Below are some of my fave options:
- Shelves/risers
- Over the door shoe organizers
- Space saver shoe organizers
- Baskets for flats and sandals
It can be easy to surrender to spending more of your dime on expensive organizers and solutions. Before you swipe, tap, insert or put that info in online — BREATHE. You may have something you need right in front of you. Now that we have taken a breath, assess for any additional storage and organizers you may need to add to your space. Storage organizers may not always save space but it will provide you with the most accessibility.
Again, the options are going to vary based on your space and what you own. Just remember, keep the shoes you wear most in a prime real estate location and keep them off of the floor for a streamlined and organized closet.
Now that we’ve decided on organizers and storage for shoes, let’s hang some of this stuff up!
Tip #2: My go to hangers are black velvet hangers, and here’s why.
- Velvet hangers will always add the streamlined look to any space and it helps you save space. (plastic and wooden hangers take up way more space)
- Black velvet hangers will always be around! You’ll never have to worry about not being able to find the color you need to keep the consistency going in your closet
Don’t you hate having to do extra work when it comes to hanging clothes?! Here’s what you should also note about these hangers — your clothes won’t always end up on the floor! Hangers are designed with specific uses in mind. If you need to make an ideal decision in regard to a different type of hanger, be sure to assess again the size of the closet space and the amount of clothing you need to hang.
Tip #3: Organize by style/category and then color.
When organizing, it’s important to start with items, and then further categorize. Let me give you an example with clothes:
Dresses: Start with long sleeve dresses, sort them by length and then by color. Move down to short sleeve dresses. Once all of the short sleeve dresses are together, sort them using the same method as the long sleeve dresses. Length may not be as important as sorting the color with your short sleeve dresses. The goal is uniformity!
One more trick for this category would be to organize by season. Do you have any plastic organizers that need to be utilized? It’s a solution that requires no extra man power. Move those out of season clothes to an under storage or extra storage area in your home (if you have that option) to yield more open space in your closet.
An organized closet makes your morning routine that much more enjoyable. You can begin to reimagine your clothing combinations now that everything has been made more visible with a new level of clarity.
Look at you — fresh eyes in a space that you were able to organize. An organized closet is one word — THE BEST! (okay that was two)
Let me know if this helped you.
Peace and love.
