Your Kryptonite Is OVERBUYING! Here Are ✌🏾 Tangible Things You Can Do To Help!

Hey ya’ll!

I wanted to discuss one of the biggest struggles I see on a daily basis when I’m working with my organizing clients in person… overbuying.

Many times, I see my clients are bringing way too much stuff into their home, and they’re struggling with decluttering because of the amount of stuff in their home.

So because I see it so often with my clients, I wanted to share some tips to combat your kryptonite of overbuying.

So often people struggle with creating systems that are going to be functional for them because of the amount of stuff in their home. Overbuying is a habit that many of us have developed over time. It is a habit of continuously bringing things into our homes without really having a deep or solid idea of where these things are going to live in your home.

It has gotten you into a space of being overwhelmed with the lack of systems, the lack of structure, and the amount of things in your home.

This is a challenge that I see for so many clients of mine. The good news is this can be fixed. There is a very simple solution to work through this habit you have developed over time. It’s about being cognizant of the things that you’re bringing into your home. It’s as simple as that. When you are at the store or when you are shopping online, before you press the button to buy or before you submit your credit card, you need to be very clear on where that item is going to live when it gets into your home.

That’s the first thing.

Ask yourself, “When I get this home, where is it going to go?” Does it have a place that it can live naturally, that is still going to be functional for me and that is still going to allow me to use it when I need it?

Also, consider why you’re buying it. Is it an impulse buy? Is it just something that you saw and you’re like, “Ooh, I want that!” Or, is it something that you’ve thought about and have processed, meaning you thought about the investment, and you really know you need this thing, you love this thing, you want it. Essentially, are you making a very well-educated decision on bringing that new item into your home? More times than not, if your struggle is overbuying, those two things are not happening.

You’re not thinking about where this thing is going to go once you get it into your home. You’re also not thinking about the decision of why you’re buying something else, right? More times than not, they’re impulse buys. There’s usually not a lot of thought that goes into why you’re bringing something additional into your home with a designated plan or purpose.

There are usually no thoughts around, “Do I have something similar to this? Do I already have this? Am I replacing this? Am I going to get rid of the other thing that I have in my home?”

There’s usually not that level of processing before you buy something. Again, one of the main challenges that I’m seeing with my clients in the home organizing services that I offer is there’s just an overabundance of items in the space.

If this is something you’re guilty of doing… I really want to challenge you to consider the things that you’re bringing into your home.

I want you to really think about two things:

1.When I bring this thing into my home, where is it going to go? Do I know where it’s going to live off the bat?

2. Why am I really buying this thing? Do I really need this? Is this an impulse buy? Am I replacing this with something else?

Try to be intentional with your future purchases. Be mindful about bringing new items into your home because this is going to help you override the bad habits of buying items you don’t need. Try to create healthy habits that are going to be more conducive to you living in a functional and organized home.

You deserve to live in a clean and organized home.

Alrighty, friend… hopefully, this resonates with you. Overybuying can result in a multitude of things that over time can negatively impact your quality of life. Challenge yourself with the questions I shared above and report back to me! I’d love to hear how you’re combatting overbuying if this too is something you struggle with.
